As on 24th February 2009, government data on land affected by flooding of river Kosi is as follows: affected area 3.68 lakh hectares, 237,000 houses destroyed, 19,323 cattle lost and 527 human deaths. The government has been spending close to 2 billion ruppees annually. Minimising losses is desirable but maintaining the structures is imperative.
