Niyamgiri, You are Still Alive

In 2006 Sterlite, a subsidiary of UK mining company Vedanta built a refinery in Niyamgiri Hills, Orissa, India. The intention was to mine bauxite from the Niyamgiri Hills, which is in reserved forest. It is also home to indigenous communities who are dependent on it for their livelihood. Mining on Niyamgiri will destroy its rich biodiversity and wildlife. Niyamgiri is the source of two rivers Bansadhara and Nagaballi. The refinery consumes 30,000 cu.mtrs of water per day severely affecting the ecological systems and the communities. The toxic waste material from the refinery pollutes air, ground and water. Since 2003 different groups have mobilised to fight Vedanta. On August 24th, 2010 a turning point was reached in the struggle to save Niyamgiri.

Niyamgiri is not the source of Bansadhara and Nagavali. NGOs and activists are doing false propaganda about the origin of these two rivers.

It is human nature to hold on to something which can be relied upon. The tribal people who have been isolated for long and have been neglected in modern times, have continued to carry on with their ways and tradition only because of their natural surroundings, which has continued to provide them with all their needs. For these people, their natural surroundings also hold significant religious ties because of their pagan beliefs, just like an important temple, mosque, gurudwara or church.

As others have pointed out, I was initially surprised and disappointed looking at the number of dislikes. Then again, I think this is something we can expect more of in the coming days - indifference for the environment is growing; we are shunning all our values in favor of rapid growth and industrialization. However there is still hope - we can yet reverse these trends and avoid the mistakes the developed countries made. And documentaries like these are steps in the right direction.

An intersting video- exmple of sheer injustice raising many questions on the idea of 'progress' and 'development'.. whose land? and who has rights on it? whos priorities and whose comforts and lives matter? Who decides progress, and on whose blood n tears? And who is progressing in ths 'progress' and whose lives are shatterd in the process.. How true was Arundhati's remark - "Flags are pieces of colored cloth, first used to shrinkwrap people's brains and then, to bury their dead" !

Raises so many questions, the video would definitely touch hearts , for those who have one... Whose land is it anyway- these people living here for ages, or the somebody in an A/c room far away in delhi? For whose development and in whose lands? Its their land beyond doubt- do they need bauxite? shouldnt v leave them alone? Hearts have hardened, Sense returns only when ones own world shatters.. The dislikes are from the vedanta company goons and those the company has coopted. Vedanta bribes everyone in its path, poisons the land and water, exploits all the resources the people need and even kills people, It has had the impunity to do so because of the support from the PMO, corrupt judges as well as the local Congress politician Bhaktha Charan Das who election was funded by Vedanta, Chief minister of Orissa, PC Chidambaram, among others.

Very insightful ...
Very insightful documentary. It is indeed sad that these tribals are being overlooked in the quest for modernization and natural resources. It would be unjust to sacrifice them as well as the flora and fauna in this beautiful ecosystem.
