The film / television industry is set to take off so sound engineers are bound to be in demand.
Sound engineering constitutes 2 aspects, one is that of location sound (sync sound) and the second one is that of studio sound.
Both these fields have demand but there is a dearth of location sync sound engineers. This is more challenging and requires better skills. More important this also involves your ability to think on your feet.
Regarding learning. Most sound engineers have learned on the job but FTII offers the best course(3 years). Some of other institutes offer courses for a few months. They may help you understand the basic idea. Mumbai University too offers a course.
Given your back ground in music, studio sound will suit you better.
The best option is FTII. Second option is learn the basics in a short course and become an apprentice to a sound engineer.
The industry looks for quality output. They dont want to risk with you till they have seen you performing for a while which is possible only when you assist someone for a while.
For a fresher, go and meet the sound engineers / studios and offer to join them as an apprentice. The list of sound engineers is available on our website. Doing a course will make entry as an apprentice easier.
